The 7th annual ReelAbilities Film Festival kicks off

The 7th annual ReelAbilities Film Festival kicked off in Forest Hills today at the Central Queens Y.
The festival presents eight films from around the world which focuses on people with disabilities who overcome a variety of challenges. Following each screening, there will be a discussion with filmmakers, social workers or others involved in the films’ production.
Directed by Chares Jones, the U.S. film Austistic Like Me: A Father’s Perspective, tries to dispel the notion that “big boys don’t cry” when a group of fathers and male caregivers discuss the hardships and acceptance of caring for autistic children.
Hear This!, a short film directed by Soulaima El Khaldi and filmed in The Netherlands, shows the story of a young deaf boy who has to convince his community that he is capable of playing competitive soccer.
The festival ends with Guest Room, a short movie directed by Joshua Tate. The film follows a young woman with Down Syndrome, Glee’s Lauren Potter, and her struggle with an unplanned pregnancy.
