On Friday night, the New York Pops closed out their first summer performances at Forest Hills Stadium. The stadium, which will be home to the New York Pops each summer, was packed with visitors who enjoyed a variety of performances by the pops orchestra. International stars Meow Meow, Pink Martini – featuring lead singers China Forbes and Storm Large  –  also joined the stage to take part in a wonderful evening of music under the stars.

The ladies, along with the energetic Thomas Nishimoto, performed everything from lively dance tunes to soft tales of love and betrayal. Each woman brought something different to the stage; whereas China Forbes brought a classic flair and personal stories, Storm Large’s commanding presence gave the audience an air of edginess. Aussie Meow Meow’s comedic and over-the-top performance using two men from the audience still matched well to her powerhouse vocals. At the end of the night, a collective performance among the women brought down the house and even started a conga line.

The New York Pops played along beautifully with songs from France, Romania, Japan, the Middle East and more. Some of the highlights  included a haunting viola solo,  the exuberant performance of Donde Estas, Yolanda and the French-inspired Sympathique.

The New York Pops return to their home at Carnegie Hall on October 9 at 8 pm.
