Hits: 139

Families, elected officials and organizations from around the community descended on Metropolitan Ave. today to celebrate the community’s veterans at the Forest Hills Kiwanis Club and American Legion-organized Memorial Day Parade.

Classic cars took to the road, dancers young and old from Jorday Rivera’ Dance Studio performed their well-rehearsed routine, and locals from around the area enjoyed perfect weather and the chance to say thank you to area heroes.

“It’s always great to see the pride Forest hHills has for their veterans, and to remember those who lost their lives protecting us,” said Borough President Melinda Katz.”This is my home, so I’ve bee doing this parade for I don’t know how many years. It’s a real community parade.”

Chester Fox, a Forest Hills WW2 veteran, said he had taken part in the very first Forest Hills parade decades ago.

“This is tremendous compared to what we had when we first started the parade,” he said. “Back then, we would go down to the school yard at PS 144 after the parade and they would have coffee and cake and buns, and the kids would play games.”

Check out extended coverage and many more pictures from the parade in this week’s issue, going up online on Wednesday.
