City ‘opens’ streets in Forest Hills and Rego Park

Over Memorial Day Weekend, the City freed up more than 13 miles of streets across the five boroughs to pedestrians and cyclists, as part of an expansions of its Open Streets initiative.
Nearly one-third of the of the three miles of walkways newly pedestrianized in Queens are located in Forest Hills and Rego Park, including stretches near Yellowstone Park and Painter’s Playground.
Yellowstone Park is now open as well.
The additions bring the running total length of open streets citywide to 43 miles, surpassing the City’s target of 40 miles by the end of May.
“New Yorkers deserve space to safely enjoy the outdoors in their own neighborhoods,” Mayor de Blasio said in a statement. “It’s clear we need to continue expanding this program, and that we should consider this initiative a key part of reimagining how we use our public streets during and after the crisis.”
Opening hours for pedestrians generally run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. These are the local roadways that were designated last weekend:
- 99th Street from the Horace Harding Expressway to 66th Avenue
- 66th Road between 110th Street and the Grand Central Parkway
- Ascan Avenue from Queens Boulevard to Austin Street
- 68th Road from 108th Street to Yellowstone Boulevard
- Dieterle Crescent between Alderton Street and 65th Drive

We just walked by Yellow Stone Park. Neither Yellowstone Street or the park itself is open. We walked all around the park to make sure.
