With just a few weeks before the Forest Hills Memorial Day Parade, parade organizers hosted a kick-off party for sponsors at the West Side Tennis Club last night.

This year’s sponsors include Aigner Chocolates, Heartbeet Eatery, Ridgewood Savings Bank, Maspeth Federal Savings, 5 Burros Cafe, Acey Ducey’s, Budde Cleaners and Alberto Restaurant among others.

“Parades are not cheap,” said Tom Long, commanding officer of the American Legion Post 1424. “Parades don’t happen through osmosis, parades don’t happen without hard work and probably more importantly, they don’t happen without money.”

“Without the help of every sponsor, the parade would no longer happen,” he added. “I want to say thank you, on behalf of the veterans, for your participation.”

Sponsors also got a chance to meet this year’s grand marshals – Michael Perlman and Major Michael Dunne.

“Every resident and business owner becomes a part of my Forest Hills and Rego Park family,” Perlman said. “We’re one big happy family. I’m truly grateful and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the parade.”

“This parade is a hallow, sacred American tradition that must always go on,” Dunne added. “It’s not about any of us. It’s about the service members, firefighters, police officers and EMS workers, who died in the line of duty. This is their day.”

The Memorial Day Parade will be held on Sunday, May 28th. It will begin at Metropolitan and Ascan Avenues where the parade will then move west towards Remsen Memorial Park at Trotting Course Lane. Step off is at noon.
